Blog Task Mazes Multicursal/Unicursal

1.
Unicursal

Final Fantasy XIII - Renowned for it's starkly linear gameplay is a unicursal maze. There is only one solution, this upset many fans as they felt as if they were watching a film rather than exploring an interactive experience.

Runescape - The Temple of Light is a place only accessible through maze like puzzles

Call of Duty - There is only one way to complete each level, whilst the route taken may differ. This is difficult to categorize but given the linear storytelling I'd say this game fits in the unicursal category

Portal - There is only one way to solve each puzzle

Sniper Elite Nazi Zombie Army

Smite

Multicursal

Super Monkeyball - Whilst many of the levels/stages in this game are most definitely unicursal there are also multicursal elements at some of the more difficult points in the game.

Motherlode - This game doesn't exactly contain mazes, but it's interesting that a player may almost carve out their own maze (which they would do well to remember); to search for resources to improve their mining vehicle.

From Dust - The player must get all of their settlers to safety using their godly powers to carve out the earth. This turns each level into a multicursal maze, as there can be more than one creative solution.

The Longest Journey Dreamfall - This game enables players to make game changing decisions, placing it firmly on the multicursal side

If you were to create a game about depression, you could use mazes that seemed never ending. It would be relatively easy to make your maze based game fit any story by catering the maze to it, adding in different kinds of difficulty for the issue at hand. Unicursal mazes would work very well for linear storytelling, games like Final Fantasy XIII, whereas multicursal mazes would evoke more of a player reaction. The player would have to think about what it was they wanted from the game.

Game concept

A giant icy meteor lands atop a mountain near the player's village. The player must use rocks and foliage to direct the water coming from the melting meteor away from the village. There will also be more difficult levels where flaming igneous rocks erupt from the mountain, landing on the mountain's side and rolling toward the village. The player will have to plan the water's route carefully to put out these fiery boulders.
